What is Tencel ?
Tencel is a sustainable artificial fiber made from wood pulp, mainly eucalyptus but also oak and birch.
Eucalyptus is a tree that grows quickly and without irrigation or pesticides, and Tencel production uses 95% less water than cotton production, while emitting half as much CO2.
Tencel is therefore a sustainable fiber by its production, but also by its end of life:
Indeed, Tencel is a 100% biodegradable and compostable fiber allowing easy reintegration into nature at the end of its life cycle without leaving traces of pollution.
Transformation process:
In logging forests, cellulose is extracted from trees, which is the natural sugar present in the wood and dissolved in a non-toxic solvent
The solvent is reused at 99.77% => low impact on the environment as it is produced in a closed loop circuit where the materials are constantly recycled, purified and reused.
The Tencel is an innovation from the Austrian company Lenzing, which has been a leader in eco-responsible fibers for 80 years.
Tencel is a breathable and resistant fabric very similar to silk. It is a substitute for viscose and silk in the textile industry as it is more eco-friendly.
It is a fabric appreciated for its softness, lightness and eco-responsibility, it also absorbs moisture better, which gives it natural antibacterial properties.
At DIANE Paris we prefer fabrics of European origin and we strive to source eco-responsible fibers, which is why we use Tencel for all our printed pieces.
